How does the Grant in aid work?
Grant in aid is a social benefit offered by the South African government and distributed by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA).
Also, it refers to an additional grant for specific groups as follows:
- Those who already get other grants like the war veteran’s, disability, or older person grants;
- Dependents on someone else to take care of them due to physical or mental disabilities;
- People who are not cared for in an institution and get government subsidies.
The benefits guarantee an extra R480 per month that can be paid for the person who looks after you full-time.
Furthermore, this value will be paid along with the other grant you are already receiving through some methods like electronic deposit, cash at a specific pay point, or via a welfare organization.
However, if you are not able to collect the money, you can appoint a procurator.
Additionally, the grant may be reviewed every time the other grant you already receive is reviewed.
Of course, the service is free. But there is no online application.
So, you must go to the nearest South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) office to apply for this grant.
In the process, some documentation must be presented, such as a 13-digit bar-coded ID, medical report, and proof of marital status if applicable.
It is important to mention that the qualification process can take up to three months. On the other hand, the grant will be paid retroactively from the date that you applied.
Lastly, if you weren’t approved, you have 90 days to appeal the decision to the Minister of Social Development.
