How does the Foster Child Grant work?

- Abandonment;
- Being orphaned or at risk (abused and neglected).
The benefit is paid monthly, and the value is R1 070. Moreover, this value is calculated per child. So, if you have two foster children, you will get R2 140.
To qualify for this grant, you need to be a South African citizen, refugee, or permanent resident.
And you and the child must be living in South Africa. In addition, the child must be under 18 years old and need to remain in your care following the legal way.
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) offers different payment methods, such as:
- Electronic deposit;
- Cash at a specific pay point;
- Through a welfare organization.
It is important to mention that the Foster Child Grant may be reviewed, suspended, or lapse depending on certain situations that might happen along the way.
However, the agency notifies before anything happens.
Unfortunately, there is no online application, although the service is free. Therefore, you must go to the nearest SASSA, and the process can take up to three months.
On the other hand, the benefit will be paid retroactively, meaning that you will receive the grant amounts from the date a court placed the child in your care.
