How does the War Veterans Grant work?

The grant is provided by the South African government and paid for by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA).
Unfortunately, there is no online application, although the service is free. The benefit is paid per month, and it is R2 000.
Also, to qualify for it, you need to follow some requirements, as described below:
- Be a South African citizen or a permanent resident living in the country;
- Be at least 60 years old or be disabled;
- Not be receiving other grants;
- Not being cared for in a public institution.
Additionally, income and assets requirements apply. So, you must not earn more than R 86 280 if single or R172 560 if married. Plus, you must not have assets worth more than R 1 227 600 if you are single or R 2 455 200 if you are married.
As mentioned before, you must have fought in the Second World War (1939-1945) or the Korean War (1950-1953).
The benefit is paid through different methods, such as electronic deposit, cash at a specific pay point, or through a welfare organization.
Moreover, if you are unable to collect the money, you can appoint a procurator. The grant may be reviewed, but the agency notifies you in advance.
The grant may also be suspended or lapsed, depending on what happens along the way, for example, in case of death or absence from the country, among others.
Unfortunately, the application process can take up to three months, although the payments are calculated and paid retroactively.
