The process to apply for the War Veterans Grant may take up to three months, and the service is free.

Also, the benefit is provided by the South African government and paid for by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA).

Now, learn the eligibility criteria required to apply for the War Veterans Grant:

  • Must have fought in the Second World War (1939-1945) or the Korean War (1950-1953);
  • Be a South African citizen or a permanent resident living in the country;
  • Not be receiving other grants;
  • Not being cared for in a public institution.
  • Must not earn more than R 86 280 if single or R172 560 if married;

You will get R2 000 per month through electronic deposit, cash at a specific cash point, or through a welfare organization.

Additionally, you can appoint a procurator to collect the benefit in case you are unable to do it.

However, it is necessary to mention that it is possible to suspend or lapse the grant, according to the situation that occurs.

Find the nearest South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) office and provide the following documentation:

  • Your 13-digit bar-coded ID (if you don’t have one, you will need to complete documentation and follow a standard process to certify your identity);
  • A certificate of war service;
  • Medical assessment to state you cannot work if under 60 years old;
  • Proof of marital status.

In addition, you can appoint a family member or friend to apply for the War Veterans Grant on your behalf.

As mentioned before, the process can take up to three months. However, the payments are retroactive. 

Lastly, if your application is not approved, you have 90 days to appeal the decision to the Minister of Social Development.

War veteran’s grant vs. Grant in aid

War Veterans Grant is a social benefit destined for former soldiers who have fought in the Second World War (1939-1945) or the Korean War (1950-1953) and cannot support themselves.

Another benefit provided by the South African government and distributed by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is the Grant in aid, an additional social benefit for those who are living already on another grant but cannot look after themselves.
