How does an American Airlines flight credit work?

Before telling you how to use an American Airlines flight credit, let’s explain how American Airlines travel credits work.

Firstly, as you have already seen, American Airlines provides credits for flight tickets that, for some reason, are canceled or not used.

Secondly, you must know that these credits are generally issued to the passenger who bought the ticket.

So, the person whose name was printed on the original flight ticket is the only passenger that can book and travel using the credit.

Thirdly, the credits can only be used for flights. In sum, you cannot use credits to redeem extras such as bags or seats.

Additionally, flight credits are valid for one year of the date of issuance.

Finally, American Airlines issues three types of travel credit, as follows below.

1. Trip Credit

American Airlines issues Trip Credit for compensation, remaining, and refunds value from Flight Credit exchanges.

Also, it can only be used by the credit holder to book travel. Furthermore, the credit is valid for domestic or international flights departing from an airport in the U.S.

And as I have said before, this credit cannot be used for extras like seats or bags, and it Is valid for one year.

In addition, a Trip Credit is valid for non-award bookings and limited to up to eight Trip Credits in a single passenger reservation on American Airlines’ official website.

On the other hand, if you need to book for more than one passenger, you must contact American Airlines Reservations.

2. Travel Vouchers

In second place, travel vouchers are issued in electronic form or paper for U.S. residents only.

Furthermore, it is limited to up to eight per trip, the same as the number redeemable for Trip Credit, and it is valid for flights only.

On the other hand, Travel Vouchers can be used by the holder to book travel for anyone.

3. Flight Credit

Finally, it is time to learn how to use an American Airlines flight credit.

As shown, a flight credit is created every time you have a canceled or unused ticket.

Also, it is valid for one year of the date of issuance. And only the same passenger named in the original ticket can use the credit.

Additionally, American Airlines allows one Flight Credit per passenger. But if you need to book through more than one credit, you can contact Reservations.

In conclusion, Flight Credits are valid for flights only, which means they cannot be used for extras like bags or seats. And they are valid for non-award bookings.

First of all, it is important to check your credit balance.

If you are an AAdvantage member, you can check your wallet by logging into your account to see the amount of credit you hold.

However, if you are not an AAdvantage member, you can check your balance by contacting American Airlines or just wait for an email with detailed information about your credits.

American Airlines usually sends an email in case you don’t have access to an AAdvantage account.

Now, check out the simple step-by-step on how to use an American Airlines flight credit.

1. Access your balance and your flight credit ticket information

First, you must have your flight credit ticket number ready. Therefore, you can access your account to find the number if you are an AAdvantage member.

Otherwise, use the email sent by American Airlines to get the flight credit ticket number.

2. Search for American Airlines flights to use your credit

Then, it is time to search for flights. So, access the official American Airlines website and browse to select the flight you want.

3. Apply for the Flight Credit

After selecting the flight you want, you will be asked to select how you would like to pay for your trip.

Thus, click on the button “Flight Credit”.

4. Confirm your travel information

Before proceeding with the flight credit, confirm all the information about your flight, including seats and passenger details.

5. Add your ticket credit number

Finally, add the number of your American Airlines flight credit, and proceed with the checkout process.

But let’s suppose your credit is less than the flight booked price. You will be asked to choose a payment method to pay the difference.

On the other hand, if your credit is more than the flight booked price, you will receive the remaining balance as Trip Credit for compensation.
